Light Therapy Lamps
One of the most promising new treatments available today is light therapy, also called phototherapy. During light therapy, the patient is exposed to a certain type of light such as daylight, full-spectrum light, laser light, LED light or fluorescent light depending on what they are being treated for. Light therapy lamps are commonly used to administer the treatment. Phototherapy can be used to treat seasonal affective disorder (SAD), non seasonal depression, delayed sleep phase syndrome and even acne.
Some supporters of light therapy claim various other dermatological conditions like psoriasis can be treated this way also. There are some definite advantages to light therapy. It is a non-invasive and painless way to treat certain conditions. There are different types of therapies for different problems. For example, the treatment of acne uses a blue light. This light works to kill the acne vulgaris bacteria and prevent it from reoccurring and spreading. Having your acne treated with light therapy is often preferable to other drastic measures such as Accutane or chemical peels. After the blue light is applied the dermatologist may choose to follow the treatment with a red light which improves the skin's receptivity to the treatment.
For the treatment of SAD, some doctors recommend full outdoor sunlight. However, this may not always be possible depending on where you live or what season it is. This is where artifical light can come in handy. You can buy special lamps designed for SAD therapy. These lamps provide the patient with the ideal amount of full-spectrum light without the dangers of ultraviolet radiation. Also these lamps are made to be easy on the eyes. They are so easy to use because all you do is sit in front of them at the distance prescribed by your physician.
Although you may not be able to find light therapy lamps in very many stores, you can definitely find them online. You can buy all kinds of lamps for various therapy purposes on the Internet. Your physician may also be able to direct you to a vendor of these lamps or even provide one for you. Light therapy isn't quite mainstream yet, but more and more doctors are starting to recognize its benefits.
